Preparing Stock dog puppies for success in training

Preparing stockdog puppies for success in training involves a blend of socialization, exposure, and foundational skills. Begin by introducing them to various environments, animals, and people to build their confidence and adaptability. Early socialization is crucial; expose them to diverse situations so they become comfortable in different settings. I Start with basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, and come, using positive reinforcement techniques like treats and praise to motivate them or lots of  gentle stroking and petting them . I also take them as a pack on long walks through different terrains such as long grass where they might get lost. This teaches them to follow suite, listen and stick together. They go up hills through sagebrush, navigating the mazes of trees and downfall. I’ll often lead them purposefully over fallen logs and debris. Learning to run-through these types of obstacles builds muscle memory and athleticism. It gets their mind working at a young age.

As they gain confidence and coordination we may begin to cross the creeks and rivers, splashing through the water. It’s amazing what the pups will learn through play and watching other dogs. Even if you don’t have to option of a pack, the pup will still learn from your lead.

After they grow up a bit I take them solo through fields and lengthen there walks. I will gradually introduce them to livestock in a highly controlled manner, allowing them to observe and gently interact with dog broke lambs. (dog broke is very important)  It is imperative at this point that I am with the young dog at all times to ensure no harm can come upon them in the training pen. They gain confidence through chasing and learning to use their eye to move the lambs. An injury or bad experience can really delay and sometimes ruin training.

Consistency is key; establish a routine that incorporates training sessions mixed with playtime to keep their engagement high. Lastly, be patient and attentive to each puppy's individual temperament and adjusting your approach as needed to foster a strong bond and a desire to learn.

These puppies are extraordinary and have the capability of doing wonderful things, if they trust you as their leader.

Always be fair and never ask them to do things they are not ready for.  Go slow in training and your reward will be elevated trust from your puppy.  The look in her eyes, the wag of his tail, the response to run to you when they trust you is unbelievable and worth the wait!
